2012 Starts off with trouble

2012 Mustang
Stratford March 25, 2012. The winter is over and it is time to heat up some rubber. FCSCC had their rookie school and non points event this weekend. I volunteered as I usually do for the rookie school. At the end of the day the volunteers got a chance to run the course. I was hoping for this and brought the 65. It is still on street tires which made it even more fun. I was able to get 4 runs in with it, before someone asked me to drive his corvette zr1. I was a bit surprised as I was driving rather aggressively and caused a smoke show in the 1965. He assured me that he saw me drive and was wondering what I could do in his car. That car has twice the amount of horse power then my car does, and it was a lot faster. A lot of fun.

The fun came to an end this morning when I got off the highway on my way to todays first non points autocross. The 65 didn’t sound right. Like it was running on 7 cylinders instead of 8. It was also making funky knocking noises. I decided not to beat on it. Sam was nice enough to offer me to co-drive his 2012 V6 Mustang. I took him up on the offer. It was a lot of fun. The 2012 V6 has more power then my 2005 GT and at the same time it is much lighter. Mark was driving his 5.0 mustang, and said that since both run the same tire, with the cold weather conditions the V6 should outrun the V8. We got close, but he still had us by 2 seconds. I ended up in 3 place, beaten by a AWD Subaru WRX.

As tight as an European Speedo

Posted June 8th, 2011 by mjboerma

Hartford, June 5th 2011. That’s right, Matt designed a course that was as tight as an European Speedo. And that’s tight. Mind you, I don’t have power steering! In addition I helped a neighbor move the day before and I was in pain at the end of the day. The course started with a tight slalom, followed by a right hander that lead to a ridiculous offset. First sharp left, sharp right and another sharp left. Very short straight, sharp left hander, offset to a 180 degree turn, another offset into the finish. Crazy, but a lot of fun!

Back in action!

sunnyday
Stratford May 29, 2011. That’s right, although still dirty from the rainy day with CART the 65 is back together. I would like to say the day went by without incident, but that is not entirely true. On my way over to Stratford something was starting to make noise, like something was loose. I noticed that the stick shift was wobbling around like a bobble head. Since the exit I had to take was near I decided not to pull over (although I was afraid I was going to loose something). At the end of the exit I stopped to investigate. The tools were in the passenger seat, so I didn’t have to leave the car. Four screws to take the boot off which revealed the issue. Two bolts that were loose. I tightened them, closed up the boot and within minutes I was on my way.

Who really needs a driveshaft?

rainyday
Hartford May 15, 2011. Well, I do! This was the first event this year where I took out the 65 Mustang. Ray was the course designer and setup a shoestring course, a big zig-zag that looped around on itself. The forecast showed rain and lots of it. But no worries as I have installed windshield wipers. For the occasion I also put on regular (rain) street tires.

Lebanon Drift

Posted June 1st, 2011 by mjboerma

Dew or DieMay 13, 2011. Lebanon Drag way NY. Last week I took a drive up to Lebanon Raceway to check out Dewey drifting. This was the very first time I have actually been at a drift event (besides watching tons of videos). In theory it looks a great way to practice car control. I was actually considering doing it myself, until I drove shot gun with Dewey and saw the abuse the car has to take. Our cars are setup for grip and not for spinning out, so it takes a bit more effort to have the rear slide. I must say it was a lot of fun. Almost makes me want to pick up a $2000 beater. But that would be crazy. Jeremy shot the following video:

Eat sleep drive
Hartford April 16, 2011. I was not sure which event to choose, it was either FCSCC or CART. Today is Tom’s wedding party, so I had to leave early. A better choice would have been FCSCC as it is closer to my house, but I decided to run with CART. I am still trying to steal away the jacket from Ray. Ray almost forgot it was a Saturday event. I guess more people forgot, because there were only 43 registered drivers.
